Information about Hindi as International Language

COURSE IN HINDI AS AN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE FOR FOREIGNERS

MGAHV: A unique and alternative Institution

It has been the ardent desire of the national leaders as well as the Hindi well-wishers that Hindi being an important International language should occupy its rightful status at the international forum of United Nations to express the sentiments and feelings of the Indian people. Secondly, they also visualized to set up an International Secretariat for Hindi to coordinate the linguistic communication not only among the people of Indian origin spread over many countries but also in the whole world. There was also vision to establish a Central Hindi University to promote and develop Hindi to its fullest potential as an International Language. This vision was materialized in the year 1997 with the establishment of  Mahatma Gandhi Antarrastriya  Hindi Vishwavidyalaya (MGAHV) at Wardha, Maharastra, the "Karmabhoomi" of Mahatma Gandhi. (It seems the other two visions would also take shape through the MGAHV.)

MGAHV came into existence in the last decade of the second millennium and is poised to start functioning with full vigor and the vitality during the first decade of the new millennium. As a matter of fact, it is at the crossroads. India's knowledge base has to be further strengthened for which innovative alternatives are being thought out. MGAHV is conceived as an alternative institution of Education. It is the outcome of a lateral thinking process using value-engineering techniques to achieve Gemba-kaizen-the continuous effort for the innovation educational techniques and process with the cost effective policies.

The very name Mahatma Gandhi prompts the University to prepare a curriculum that includes studies in Non-violence and Peace, Women Studies, Hindi as an alternative language for technology and business.
Gandhism aims at providing opportunity for personal and social fulfillment in unison. Ethical behaviour, world fraternity and cultural interaction are the basic tenets of Gandhian thoughts. MGAHV 's curriculum and programmes incorporate these components throughout. Therefore, the Gandhian philosophy will amply be reflected in MGAHV's work culture, curriculum and administrative system.

It can be safely said that MGAHV is a unique university which is conceived as universal in knowledge base and international in its spread. It would be mainly residential University, but may have its study centers across the country and abroad too.

The MGAHV positions itself as an International Platform to provide various courses of higher education seeped in Indian ethos and traditions, combined with the modern technologies to achieve its covered goals.

Need/Concerns/Aim

India is a multilingual country where 1652 mother tongues are spoken. The major lingua franca used is Hindi A foreigner while visiting thin multilingual country becomes more worried about communication. If he/she knows that one linuga franca can solve the problem of communication, he/she would like to acquire at least, the functional knowledge of that particular lingua franca. Further, if the foreigner is also interested to know or study about the culture of the country, he/she would have comparatively deeper study of that particular language. The above practical need has led the University to launch suitable Hindi courses mainly for foreigners to impart the functional, literary and cultural ingredients of Hindi.
